Everybody and their mother has a Facebook.

As well as their father, grandparents, and in some cases, dog.

More like CREEPBOOK. FACE. ...book.

More like CREEPBOOK. FACE. ...book.

Facebook has become a such a standard that I get asked more if I’m on Facebook than if I have an email address (to be fair, nobody ever emails me anyway). I get friend requests from people that I meet later, which makes for a surreal and confusing “I know you from somewhere…” interaction. It’s the home of many a record-breaking game, like Farmville. And it’s the source of everything absolutely factual about life.

Well, that last one isn’t true, but people like to think it is. Read more…

Gender In Boxes

I don’t usually write politically charged posts, and I think that’s why most of them are boring and unread.

Working with quiet and exploring issues of gender dynamics this season has been really interesting, especially meeting with people who have all these different ideas and viewpoints on the subject. It’s really made me evaluate my own thoughts on gender and how it plays into society and the like, much like T-Rex in this Dinosaur Comic:

"BETWEEN PANELS!" is the most genius plot device I've ever seen in a webcomic.

"BETWEEN PANELS!" is the most genius plot device I've ever seen in a webcomic.

It’s also made me evaluate myself and how I’m perceived in relation to my gender. It’s actually sort of strange to me. Read more…

Wow.

So I was casually looking at my computer’s clock when I noticed the date. It’s been a month since I moved to Seattle. I felt compelled to write about it. It’s been a big month.

I’m living with some very good friends I met at NAU, Matt and Roxy Hornbeck. As soon as I got to Seattle, Matt and Roxy took me to a rehearsal for quiet’s production of “Pick-Up Artist: The Musical”. For those of you who don’t know what quiet is, it’s a non-profit multi-disciplinary arts community. And for those of you not familiar with the show, Matt wrote it for his master’s thesis in sociology. After a few days of tagging along to rehearsals, Matt asked me if I play the bass. Knowing what was coming next, I simply said, “Not yet.”

So I started learning how to play the bass. I learned the show in the two weeks before we got into tech week. Once tech week started, it became clear that there wasn’t anybody with the time, or else the experience, to build the set. So in the few days before we opened I built three platforms. Along with having very little help, we also had the wrong screws, and the paint didn’t take to kindly to drying with it being cold and dark outside. It finally got done by final dress. Read more…

Wow, Geoff. You know, I’ve found that creating things like The GEOFFGASM! is really easy to do, but following through is a lot harder. That’s why “Let’s Talk About Stuff” failed. What’s funny about that is I deleted that website a few months ago, and only a few people have asked me about it. I’m pretty sure only one of them was one of the writers.

My problem is that I get too easily distracted. I get on my computer with the intent of writing a post, or even making a video, but as soon as I open up my web browser to come to this site or find something to write about, I immediately get sucked into the social networks. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, doesn’t matter. They take over my life as soon as this damn machine gets turned on. So I’m thinking about taking a hiatus. I’m not going to delete my Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr, but I am going to stop visiting them. Which means that anyone who’s reading this, if you use any sort of social networking tool to contact me, you should probably just stick with email, text, or even phone calls (if people still do that anymore). Otherwise, I might not get it for a while.

Too bad nobody reads this except you, man.

Yeah. Talking to you.

Flash games.

I can’t get enough of them. I play flash games like they’re going out of style. Every once in a while I find one that really catches my attention as a well made game. I usually play games until I beat them, but when I find one that I especially like, it becomes an obsession to finish it. So I decided that when I come across a game like that, why not share it with you guys? Every time I play a game that I think is worthy of recognition, I’ll put it on here. We’ll start with one I recently found and loved:

This past week or so has gone by in quite a blur. Last weekend I had 4 performances in 2 days for The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), which went very well. The week leading up to that was one of scrambling to get the set pieces finished and painted, getting used to the props and costume changes, and just overall working my ass off. This week, following the production, has been one of me going to see what I would consider 3 of the best movies this year. Monday I went to an advanced screening of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World which was INCREDIBLE. I’ll definitely be writing an early review of it in the near future. On Tuesday I had my second viewing of Toy Story 3, which was just as good as the first time. And yesterday I saw Inception, which I’ve been dying to see since it came out. Absolutely stunning. I loved the story telling, the mixture of action and legitimate plot, and the thoughtful questions it gave me to ponder. And of course the effects were beautifully done. It’s a movie I’ll talk about more after I’ve seen it a second time.

I also got a job yesterday! It’s a small one, but a job nonetheless. I’m designing the website for my friends Matt and Roxy’s community of artists, Quiet Productions. It should be great fun.

So there are the reasons that I’ve been away from writing posts or making more videos. Busy doing a show, followed by being lazy and watching awesome movies. That changes today.

Because I wrote this post.

And I’m planning a new video.

Look for it soon. As for me, I’m off.

Catch you later.

Thought you should know I totally blasted my pecs today.

So there was a little hiccup in the whole “personal trainer” plan. Apparently my father misunderstood what the gym told him. The information he was given was that it was $250 for 6 group sessions. What he took that as, as well as how I took it, was that you pay $250, and a group goes for 6 sessions. Well, we got to the first session with the personal trainer, and he’s a really awesome guy, totally willing to cater to what we wanted to get out of the workout. Unfortunately, what the gym neglected to mention, is that we get separate times to do individual work, because we all have individual needs. This means that for $250, each member of my family gets a single one hour session, and then two of us would get a second session. As it turns out… you can’t do much in one session.

So as it turns out, we’re not doing the whole personal trainer thing. Bummer.

However, that doesn’t mean that Project Pec Blast has to be thrown away, I’m still able to work out on my own. So today (I guess yesterday, since it’s about 3:00 AM) I went in and started testing equipment, seeing what I like to use, and checking what my max weights for lifting are. It was an exhausting process, and I definitely got more of a workout then I’ll probably usually get once I have a routine down. I’ll probably be hurting tomorrow. On top of that, I cranked out three miles on the ellipticals. I usually just do two, but today I went up a notch. This whole gym thing is starting to become something I enjoy, which is definitely a good thing.

Recently I was browsing the internet to find interesting things to write about, and I came upon a really cool post on the blog Daily Kos. Now, while that is generally a political related blog, the post I became interested in is a Photo Tour of The Solar System posted by the author Troubadour. Head on over and check that out.

Now, going through the plethora of satellite images on that photo tour, I noticed something I had never really considered before. Earth seems to be the only celestial body in our solar system that has any significant amount of water. It’s incredible that Earth has what appears to be, like, 99.99% of the water in the entire solar system. That’s an absurd amount. Even looking at the rest of our galaxy, and even universe, scientists have yet to discover another planet that is capable of sustaining life besides Earth, mainly because of the lack of water. Now, I know that we haven’t even made a dent in our search of the universe, but we’ve still observed an incredible amount of rocks floating around out there. The statistic is staggering.

We take water so much for granted. From our perspective, we have more water than anything else on the planet. However, to make a Star Wars reference, we’re a veritable Kamino in a universe of Tatooine’s. And thinking of Earth in terms of holding the gross majority of water, period, it really puts things like this BP oil spill into an odd perspective. When you fuck with Earth’s water, you fuck with all water. I don’t think we can handle that responsibility. I’m going to think back to this thought the next time I spill a glass of water. Hell, I might even take shorter showers.

But probably not.

The Topic of Significance

There are so many things in life that are so important. Striving for power. Feeling accomplished. Doing something to make a difference. I’m not one to challenge that any of these things aren’t a good idea. Everyone needs something to get them through life, to drive their actions, to give them a reason to get out of bed in the morning. However, I feel that people put too much stock in things that are ultimately just another speck in existence, in everything anyone has ever known, or will know. Someone does one thing that upsets someone else, even unwillingly, and that person can feel the effects of that for hours, days, even lifetimes, and upset is something that is never fun to feel. And our brains make it hard on us. It’s our own mind that attaches onto these things that we feel are so important and wrings them like a rag, looking for every drop of significance we can gather. It takes a very disciplined mind to step back from these instances and ask “is any of this really worth getting worked up over?” and not having your own thoughts retort with “YES IT IS. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN MY LIFE.” I struggle with this concept every single day.

Sleep, or Lack Thereof

Well, so much for the whole “going to sleep and waking up early” thing. Last night I got in bed around 9 PM to try and recreate the previous night, and I spent about an hour and a half staring at the inside of my eyelids trying everything I could to fall asleep, including not trying anything. Nothing. So I got up and ended up staying awake until about 4. Thanks brain.

Tonight’s no different. I’m sitting here 3 AM wide awake, and it’s really sorta pissing me off. Maybe trying to make a decent sleep schedule happen is causing me to stay on a messed up one. I’m gonna set my alarm for “early” tomorrow to see if I can shock my body into going to sleep early tomorrow night. I’ll let you know how that goes.

On a brighter note, I’ve been hitting a consistent 2 miles on the elliptical at the gym and it feels great. I start Project Pec Blast on Friday, so I hope I can be rested for it tomorrow night.

I also recently started replaying Super Paper Mario for the Wii. I’m about 8 hours in and I’m remembering how much I love this game. If you haven’t played it, I highly suggest it.

I thought you should know that I just found a bag of peppermint sticks in my night stand and it MADE MY NIGHT.

Well, that’s all for me. I’m gonna lay in bed and hope for sleep to hit. Or just watch Friends.

Catch you later.
